It was also a confusing and scary time, as the king was coming after those of The Way, of which she, the master, Mary (her mistress), her son John Mark, and the whole household belonged.
John Mark (he lets her call him that, although she finds it hard to) had told her that James had been put to death and he feared other apostles could be next.
These were the thoughts in her mind as she drew water from the well in the early morning. The birds sang, and it made her think of the joy of following Jesus, the freedom she now knew, unlike any other freedom she had ever known. A freedom that included a relationship with Jesus and life eternal with Him as well. She could not help but smile as she thought about it, despite the threat that had invaded the home where she lived.
She got back and the house was full. How did this happen? When she left there was just the mistress, the master, John Mark, and a few servants. This new turn of events made her uneasy, as she didn’t understand what was going on.
She found John Mark. She didn’t even have to ask. “They’ve taken Peter,” he said. He saw the fear on her face and put his hand on his shoulder. “It is alright, we shall pray to the Father. Whatever the outcome, He knows best and has our brother in His hands.”
And pray they did. People came from all around Jerusalem to gather for prayer. In between her chores Rhoda joined them, praying for Peter’s well-being, for his release.
There was a knock on the door. Rhoda got up from kneeling and went to let whomever in that was there. Obviously, it was someone else coming to join in the prayer group.
She opened the door and gasped. Could this be? It was! It was Peter!
She slammed the door shut and ran back to tell everyone. She found John Mark. “Praise Jesus! Peter has been rescued! He’s at the door!”
She said it so loud and with so much enthusiasm that everyone heard her. John Mark smiled. “You must be mistaken, Rhoda. Maybe it was his angel, but it was not him.”
“It is him! It is! He has been saved from death by the Father, praise His name forevermore.”
She would not give up. So finally, to prove her wrong, John Mark and the rest of the group went to the front door.
And when they opened it, they were face to face with the apostle Peter. “Ha. I was wondering if anyone was going to let me in” He grinned that Apostle Peter grin. “Now. What’s for dinner!”
They welcomed him in. They danced for joy. They sang hymns. They ate. And they praised the name above all names, the name of Jesus.
