I forced myself to my feet again and ran. My legs weighed a million tons. I fought hard to move them faster, but they held me back, weighing me down like two blocks of cement.
My breath squeezed from my lungs. I didn’t have to look this time. I knew the blackness had grown over my chest. I fell to my knees, almost toppling over, but I managed to get my hands under me. There I was, on all fours, panting to catch a breath, like a dog whose tongued lolled out of its mouth after a run.
I looked again for the light of the presence of God. Nothing. Nowhere. Silence. The proverbial “deafening” silence. I opened my mouth to cry out but could not make a sound. The blackness enveloped my shoulders. I could feel its icy tendrils inching up my neck.
I failed Him, repeatedly. No matter how hard I tried, I never got it right. And, all those good things I wanted to do, they remained as mere wishful thoughts in my heart, never managing to make it out.
I fell over on my side, immobilized. It didn’t matter, though. I had nowhere to go. The darkness swallowed everything but my eyes, nose, and mouth. “Please forgive me,” I whispered, closing my eyes.
Somewhere deep inside, I heard something.
“A-ma-zing grace,”
I remembered.
“How sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me,”
Could it be?
“I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.”
I opened my eyes. Jesus stood before me. He stretched out His hand in my direction. I looked at it and could see the hole of the nail in His hand. A small stream of blood came out of His pierced hand and flowed to His index finger. A drop formed on the end of His finger, then fell.
All I could see was that drop of blood. Crimson, it fell, yet golden it shone, like the brightest sun. He spoke my name. MY name, and He said it with compassion I never experienced anywhere.
The blood dropped towards me. I reached out my hand. It fell in my palm. I looked at it as it landed.
In that moment, it was like I sat on the grass of a field, looking into the night. I could hear the firecracker launched from its tube somewhere in the distance. I stared into the sky with anticipation, waiting.… Waiting…. Then … “BOOM.”
The darkness exploded into a million fragments, and the light of His presence filled my soul. I leapt to my feet into His waiting embrace. My sins stood high as the sky, but His grace was more than a multitude of mountains.
