“Tammi! Good evening. I am so glad to see you awake. My name is Regina and I am your nurse tonight.” Regina skirted over to the EEG machine situated next to Tammi’s bed to read vitals and then wrote her name and drew a big smiley face on the laminated board on the adjacent wall.
“Someone was just in my room and he gave me my legs back!” Tammi’s voice was raspy still but she managed to get out what she needed to say to Regina.
Regina turned towards Tammi and her visage was that of pity. She walked over to the side of the bed and took hold of Tammi’s hand. She patted the top of it and with her other hand smoothed back the wispy red bangs on Tammi’s forehead.
“Honey, there hasn’t been anyone in here since I came in three hours ago to check on you. You have been asleep; it was just a dream.” Regina had been on shift for five hours by then and her station is just outside the door. She would have seen anyone that entered or left Tammi’s room.
Tammi jerked her hand out of Regina’s and glared at her. Regina was a lovely woman; she probably had a hunk of a boyfriend that doted on her and gave her everything she ever wanted. At that moment though, Tammi hated Regina. She knew what she saw and heard. She knew that when she awoke her legs were gone and then an angel appeared and he gave her back her legs. Surely Regina could see that Tammi had legs under the blanket.
Regina smiled and began to softly speak to Tammi, “Tammi, I’m going to get the doctor but I’ll be right back. Okay?”
Tammi nodded. The doctor would know more than this woman. As the door shut, Tammi looked around the room for any sign that the angel had been there. There was nothing in the room that gave evidence of it that she could see but she knew what she had experienced was as real as the wreck itself. Then, it dawned on her that she didn’t know about Rob. Had he even survived?
The swish-swish of the doctor’s lab coat gave way to his arrival in her room. He was a tall man with thick brown hair and a nice smile. Regina stood next to him and for a brief moment Tammi wondered if the two of them were an item. They looked good together. Her thoughts were interrupted when Doctor Good Looking began to speak.
“Tammi, I am Dr. James and I am so happy to see you awake. Do you mind if take a look at your head wound? I promise it won’t hurt a bit.” His smile was comforting and Tammi nodded that it was okay.
As Dr. James lifted bandages and peered under them, he continued to talk to Tammi. “Tammi, do you know why you are here?”
Tammi nodded, “I was in a car wreck.”
“That’s right. What else do you remember?” He gazed into her eyes as he inquired.
“I remember waking up just a little while ago and my legs were gone. Then an angel was in my room and he gave them back to me. He was here, really. See, my legs are back!” Tammi could barely speak so the doctor had to lean in close to hear her clearly.
He raised back up and looked at her again. This time his smile was just like Regina’s when Tammi told her about the angel; it was one of pity.
“Tammi, both your legs were badly damaged in the accident and they could not be saved. I had to remove them so that you would live.” Before he could finish, Tammi raised her arm in frustration and attempted to uncover her legs but she was too weak.
He continued, “Tammi, I was able to fit you with mechanical legs today while you were sleeping.” He pulled back the covers and there stretched out in front of her were two long robotic looking things that were to be her new legs.
All Tammi could do was cry when she saw them. She thought of the angel and became angry for believing him.
