We lived in northeast Iowa not far from the Mississippi River and my parents owned a cabin along the river. Whenever we could we visited the rugged wooden cabin, but with war rationing of gasoline in the 40's, it made the time spent on the river so precious. In the summer, a two week vacation allowed us time to swim, fish and enjoy the sandy beach.
With my two younger brothers and sister while playing on the beach, we would build some of the finest sand castles a person could imagine. However, being built of sand they would not stand long against the waves that often destroyed our wonderful art forms.
It reminds me of the parable of the two builders that our Lord Jesus speaks of in Matthew 7: 24 to 27. " There for whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built the house upon a rock." It also speaks of the foolish man who built a house on sand: "And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell; and great was the fall of it."
Our gracious and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the Rock upon which Christian faith is built. If we confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that God has raised him from the dead, the promise is everlasting life in God's eternal kingdom. The Bible tells us in John 3:16, " For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believed in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Our physical life span here on the earth is not long but it is assuring to know, to be absent from the body is to be home with the Lord. Pray our lifetime is spent building , like the wise man, a Christian life serving the Lord .
