Trod life’s catwalk in her prime,
Her melodies of sweet delight
Made her a heart-throb in her time.
Much favoured by the town’s elite
She wined and dined on sumptuous fare;
Then all the world was at her feet,
Loved and feted everywhere.
But gradually as years went by
The claws of time would take their toll—
Too many fingers in the pie!!
Her life was other’s to control.
The voice began to lose its pitch,
Long wrinkled years began to show,
Her life that moved without a glitch
Had lost its glamour and its glow.
Her suitors moved to other fields,
To them she now was “out of date”—
She’d nothing left of much appeal—
They fled and left her to her fate.
Now abandoned on life’s scrapheap,
Unloved, unwanted and alone,
With only memories to keep--
In twilight years the limelight’s gone.
Today we laid her in the ground,
No rapt audience gathered there,
With no fanfare, without a sound,
As Pastor said the final prayer.
Limelight Lilly’s left the spotlight—
No ornate tombstone bears her name—
Gone out of mind and out of sight:
How fleet of foot is flitting fame!!
