Andrea was deep in thought, but answered her friend. “That new place, ‘Hair from Him’. It was pretty cool. Mom gave me her credit card and said now that I’m 18 I should be able to pick where I get my hair done.”
“I hope my Mom is that chill next month when I turn 18. She tries to control everything in my life, including how I even brush my hair,” Candice said and rolled her eyes. She noticed that Andrea was not really paying attention to her. “Are you ok?”
Andrea looked at her friend as if she just realized Candice was there. “Yeah. The lady that did my hair was talking to me. She is really nice. She’s kind of old, like thirty, but she seems pretty cool. She told me all this interesting stuff.” Andrea paused and then continued. “Have you ever thought about going to church?”
“Church? Not really. Why?” Candice was a bit confused. What had happened to her friend?
“Well this lady, Amy, told me all this stuff about what Jesus did for her. She said He has really changed her life.” Andrea’s stopped as if trying to figure something out.
“That’s what all those Christians say. Remember Jamie? She was such a rebel last year, but this year when school started, she was different. She told everyone that she had an encounter with Jesus at some Church camp. Now she’s all good and stuff. It’s weird.” Candice wondered why her friend was acting so strange.
“Amy is different than anyone I have ever met,” Andrea said, turning to face Candice. “She told me she had always hated people who called themselves Christians. She thought they were phony and fake.”
“They probably are,” Candice interrupted. “How can anyone be that happy?”
“But,” Andrea began again, “Amy told me she had been into some really bad things. She said her life was spiraling out of control. Then a friend asked her to go to a ladies night event at her church. Amy said that night changed her life forever.”
Candice seemed intrigued at her friend’s interest in this lady. She wanted to know how the rest of the story went. “What happened?”
“She said there was a special speaker who had been in a bad place, just like Amy, but she had found someone who saw past her bad choices and loved her anyway. She said she felt something pulling at her heart. It was like someone was giving her a big hug. That night, she accepted Jesus as her Savior and she hasn’t looked back since.”
“How long ago was this?” Candice asked. She wanted to hear more.
“It was like two years ago,” Andrea said. “She changed her life, worked two jobs, and finally got the money to open the hair salon. That is why she named it ‘Hair from Him’. She said she wanted people to know that God even knows the number of hairs on our head. The whole thing was amazing.” Andrea was more and more excited as she recanted the story to her friend.
The girls sat in silence for a minute, both pondering the words Andrea had spoken. Candice finally asked, “Do you think God even cares about me?”
“I think we should go to church with Amy and see what this is all about. Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was someone who loved us so much that He was willing to die for us? That’s what Amy said. Wow that would be so wild.” Andrea sat back on her bed and looked at her friend. She knew she was going to take Amy up on her offer to visit her church the next day. She would love it if Candice came with her, but she was going either way.
“I would like that,” Candice said. “I can’t wait to meet Amy. I think my Mom would be glad if I went. She is always trying to shove Jesus down my throat. Now, I might understand why.” She was excited to find out more about this influential woman.
“Well then, I will pick you up at 9:00 tomorrow morning,” Andrea said, finalizing the deal. “Now, can you believe how awesome my hair is? So cool, huh?”
