“How beautiful,” one of them said while staring at such a radiant sight.
Another one fluttered by, a skeptical look on his face. He did not see it. His thoughts were transfixed not on the beauty of this angel, but on the true radiance coming from the throne of God.
Still, others stopped and listened, admiring the large winged angel as exquisite sounds of worship came from his body. He was the call to worship. He was to signal angels everywhere to come and worship the King. And while worship poured out of him so naturally, it became a question of who he was truly worshipping.
A third of the angels gathered to watch and listen, being distracted from the throne of God during the appointed time of worship. The mighty angel heard the comments. He basked in their wonder. He put on a show to keep their interest.
“Listen to me,” he thought silently. “Listen to the beautiful music coming out of my body.”
He held his head high. He lifted himself up a little higher, floating in the air above their heads. “I am revered by them. I am glorious. I am the most beautiful angel in this kingdom! I know what I’ll do…” He flapped his wings, sending gusts of air across their faces. The sound alone spoke of something mighty. They were awestruck.
The sight was magnificent. And as his feet touched the ground and the sounds subsided, he won the hearts of these angels by greeting each and every one of them, feeding them promises of power, beauty, and purpose. He gave them personal attention – attention that they never received from the King. They were created to glorify the King – but what was the King doing for them?
Each day as the mighty angel played the call to worship, he targeted those angels who wanted something more – who were not satisfied serving the King. He kept them entertained, distracting them from the King’s presence, and continued his devious scheme of winning their hearts through false promises. He even fooled himself.
Consumed with pride, the fallen angel put his final scheme into action - and a third of the angels – those who spent time with him, rebelled against the King. A great war broke out in the heavens; the angels of God fought against the angels of self.
One of the angels shouted, “How can we tell who is against the King?”
Michael, the leader of the King’s army, answered, “It’s easy to distinguish the enemy. Look at their gowns!”
The angel looked at the gowns of his enemies. It was evident. The enemy had spent so much time out of the King’s presence that their gowns were no longer white, but a faded light grey.
With this revelation, the King’s army quickly defeated their pursuers and hurled them from heaven, eternally separated from the King's presence.
