All of the above are good definitions and/or descriptions of “home.” Many are clichs that we have all heard. However, when I think of home, several words spring up. Words like mom, comfort, refuge, and rest. Even fun, freedom and laughter come to mind. And, of course, love. Today, though, I would like to focus on one of those words: mom. It’s been two years now since she went to her heavenly home. This gives me great pleasure to think of her being home with the One she so loved and longed for. Mixed emotions begin to swell, though, when I think of going “home” without her being there.
Several years ago, my husband and I relocated from our “home” state to pursue career changes. Each time we visited “home” mom was always there, making it a place of comfort, refuge and rest, as well as fun, laughter, and ALWAYS with the freedom to be me, knowing that I would be accepted, and even praised because of the love that so easily flowed from her heart.
I miss her. If I could speak to her today, I would have to say thanks mom, for making home home. And if I could say to moms everywhere, I would say be sure you make your house a home, a place where love abides and flows freely. Take the time to make it fun, filled with laughter. Then, when times get tough (and they will), your home will be the place of comfort and refuge and rest for those who enter it.
Of all the places I have been, home is my preference, and a guiding force for my life. Thanks to mom for making it so.
I have found that no matter where you live geographically you can still be “home” as long as the attributes of home are present. Guess the old saying you can never go home again isn’t true after all.
