With a maiden name of East the many quotations and clichés have been well known, but with a distinctly meagre sense of direction, one that stuck was that when facing North, then East is to the right. Theoretically that should help me not to get lost! Practically, I still battle to work out where I am!
One of the most encouraging messages received after I accepted the Lord Jesus as my personal Saviour was that my sins were separated from me as far as the East is from the West. A wonderful promise and better than the concept of them being thrown into the deepest sea with a sign saying “No Fishing.” Considering the disobedience to God’s commands by the world today that would not be a guarantee!
What other directives and promises does the Lord give us? One quotation I really like is from Job (37:22) when he speaks of God coming in golden splendour and awesome majesty. He was speaking in the midst of his trials, yet acknowledging that men revere God in His justice, great righteousness and because of His regard for the wise in heart. The Lord answered Job out of the storm, and when we find ourselves in a stormy situation we can do well to read what the Lord said of Himself and then, like Job, repent in dust and ashes for weakness in our faith. Chapters 38 and 39 into 40 remind us just who the God we worship is. There is great comfort in knowing that our Lord can and will do more than we can ever ask or imagine according to His great power; that same power that raised Jesus from the dead. And furthermore that nothing can separate us from His love, (Romans 8:38,39.)
As I read the Bible, particularly the Book of Ezekiel, I see several instances where the prophet speaks of “four” standing for completeness, as in the four directions, the four quarters of the earth, four living creatures, four Gospels – and more. But the big reminder is of God’s omnipresence and omnipotence.
No matter where we are on the four points of the compass, He is with us and will not forsake us, which is why we need not fear. He controls our path and the direction we must follow
Watching wrong ideas surface in the minds of those whom God has placed on my path, can cause great frustration. I find that to focus on God and not their sinful strategy is a way to keep on track. He alone knows the direction He wants them to take in order to fulfil the plans He has for them.
Lord, please help me to keep on track with You and in following Your lead help others to find their way.
