“You’re going to be a big sister,” were the words that introduced me to my little sister. I can’t remember much, but I do remember loving her so much that when she finally came home I just wanted to eat her up, which was exactly what I attempted… a mouth full of her upper arm! Surprised? I’d say we were all surprised, though probably not as surprised as she. The mouth of sirens cranked up to the level of emergency and mom came running. I do remember her asking me what had happened. Now I realize she just needed a starting point of evaluation. At the time, however, all I knew was I WAS BUSTED. I tried to deny that I had inflicted a new sensation upon my new little sister. I was actually even a little stunned at mom’s detective work. Teeth marks, and they were, well… mine.

Although that was one of my earliest memories of my sister, it was only the beginning. I think she might have tried all of her life to get even with me. The tattling, the constant repetitive abstract sounds, the annoying little habits through the years were like a prodding stick at my back, tapping as if to see if I would lose my balance and just fall over the edge. What I didn’t know then is that my little sister would amazingly become my best friend for life.

Surprised? Yes, I am surprised that she is still my friend. I am dumbfounded as to how she could remain so very loyal to someone that didn’t hold back the insults long ago. The small person that cuddled peacefully on our sofa, the one they called my sister, the one I stuck up for through school, the one that gathered my things before I took flight from my bedroom window as a teen, the one whose words can carry me through my worst of times, the one who knows me better than anyone else was placed in my life, forever my best friend.

Surprised? No, I am not surprised that one of God’s gifts would be a best friend, because His gifts are by far nothing less than all of His best.
