Topic: Christmas (04/25/05)
It was the first week of December in a country where the Christian population was less than 1% of the national population. So there were no carols, no Christmas trees, no Christmas spirit. Only the shops had decorations for the commercial side of it. As an English teacher at a local university, I could not pass this opportunity up to introduce Christmas to my students. So I made an activity to encourage my students to read the Christmas story in Luke. I also organized a Christmas party for them. December 25 was not a holiday so there were classes and we had our party on Christmas Day itself! The students presented a role play of the Christmas story. Some danced to Jingle Bells and others recited a poem related to Christmas. I also invited a couple of Christian teachers to share how they celebrated Christmas in their own countries. As well, a missionary friend also came to give a short exhortation on why we celebrated Christmas. Later on there was some fun with games, gift-giving and snacks.

During the snack time, some of my students told me that it was their first time ever to hear about the real meaning of Christmas and the reason why it was celebrated. Some said it was their first time to attend a Christmas party, or to have any activity related to Christmas. They enjoyed the gathering so much.

The following year, I changed my strategy of introducing Christmas to my students. This time, I used video showing about Christmas for my English class. It was also effective in introducing to them the meaning of Christmas. After the video, we had a discussion and a question-and-answer session. Through this the students were able to practice conversing in English. Even after our class, many of them still wanted to talk about it. Later on I had a small Christmas party at home and invited some of them who showed interest in knowing more.

Out of this group of students, a number of them later on gained an interest in knowing God more, and a few came to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Such a wonderful opportunity to bring the saving light of Christ to these young people and I pray that all of them will remember this event every time Christmas comes.

I think it is in reading stories like this that i realize that there are so many parts of our past that God gave us to make an impact on others. What a wonderful memory this is to write about again!

What a blessing that through introducing Christmas to your students, some of them came to Jesus! The Lord only knows how many more have come to Christ through those that you impacted! Thank you for bringing more people to the Kingdom!

Here's another example of the wonderful way God works in his people to bring others to Him. I'm glad he chose you because students tend to be more receptive to their teachers' involvement than just preaching. Thanks for sharing.
