Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Reading (01/25/07)
The inflections in his ten year old voice are animated and impassioned. We’re always attempting to read some new book together. While I’ve got laundry and cooking to do, he’s got homework, chores, and baskets to shoot. Things seem to be so busy, here, in our large household. It’s difficult to wait until both of us have a moment to spend together, as the stories draw us in. What began with board books and little critter stories has grown into a wonderful habit of adventures and journeys taken together, as mother and son.
Our latest endeavor takes us to a kingdom where a selfish king is humbled by a young knight. This knight is driven by a noble purpose and strengthened by a higher power. Jake recognizes right away the similarities between the story on the pages, and those of the bible. The door is open. We converse, volleying thoughts and questions. A magical moment in our everyday life may be the stuff that builds within my son’s spirit, a longing and love for the Lord. At least, that is my prayer, as I form answers and responses to the questions that spill from his heart.
He’ll have a lifelong love of reading. Of that, I’m sure. I cherish these moments we now share. As we read, we travel to far away lands that only our imaginations can create. Something inside me always smiles to see my son’s face light up, as he comes upon an exciting turn of events, spelled out in the pages of a book. Maybe, someday, he will know the joy of taking these invaluable journeys with his own children. For me, they are priceless…just like Jake.

My parents read to me from a young age and I still remember it...haven't stopped reading, since then either. What a wonderful gift to give a child.
