His Bible study leader was giving his testimony; I heard he came from a rough life, which was an understatement.
Jerry began by telling the congregation his father introduced him to cocaine at ten and heroin at twelve, his life style included spending over thirty-six visits to jail a few long term ones.
His last term he declared when he got out he was done. Standing beside the side of the road he waited for a speeding car to throw himself under. When the still quiet voice of God started replaying a sermon he heard in jail. The one that told him he was loved and Christ died for him and all he needed to do was except the free gift. Kneeling beside the dirt road he gave up his life to take on the life of Christ.
Thirty of his converts sat in church with tears in their eyes. I finally knew why he was such an awesome witness to all kinds of people. One who became my dearest friend?
After church I asked my son what his Bible studies were like. My son explained how he studied and prepared and they all searched together. He also told me it was the only Bible study he’s been to where cussing is the norm. I chuckled at that learning to talk a new language takes awhile.
My son later came with a prayer request. Jerry’s father was sick and unsaved. Jerry was afraid for his father to spend eternity in hell. My son having seen the power of pray said they all needed to pray right than and there. He said Mom it was awesome we all prayed for a very long time. Seven weeks later Jerry’s father accepted Christ.
Standing in heaven Jerry will have a host of souls to his count and the layman who preached at that prison will see the impact of his time, when they look his way and say we are here today because of you. Christ told us to evangelize the world to take the word to all people. You may not know on earth the impact you have, but in heaven all will rejoice. Are you ready to serve your Lord? The fields are waiting for your impact.
