As I gazed out at the mountains
I thought of days gone by
Life has been good to me I thought
As a tear came to my eye
I wasn’t sad in the least
My tears were of joy
I realized all the beauty around
Was here for me to enjoy
Suddenly I feel the sun on my face
And the warm wind on my skin
The gift of rain as it falls
I wondered, where have I been?
I noticed the sound of birds singing
The smell of flowers as they bloomed
The beauty of their petals
The kittens as they groomed
I could hear the sound of distant barking
I watched a spider weave its web
And I wondered to myself, where have you been?
I spent a weekend in the Smokey Mountains
And experienced all its glory
I took the time to observe my surroundings
So I could tell this story
Life passes so swiftly
We hardly stop to see
You wake up early one morning
And wonder how can this be?
Suddenly you are not young anymore
There are wrinkles on your skin
The children are all grown up
And you wonder, where have I been
Don’t discard this wonder
Take it as a wake up call
To stop and smell the roses
For your only here for a while
Take time to notice all that is around you,
The mountains, the wind, the clouds in the sky, the moon and the stars.
Take time to notice your children as they grow
Or one day you’ll awake, and wonder where did they go?
Take time to notice the flowers
How they smell and how they look
See them for real
Not just in a book
Take a step out in the rain
The next time that it falls
Listen to the birds
As they sound their mating call
Take a walk through a field
Write a poem or write a song
For our time on this wondrous earth
Isn’t for very long
Don’t allow your self to take for granted
Don’t let another day pass again
Where one day you wake up and wonder
Oh where, oh where have I been.
