Encouragement
Recently my husband and I took a trip to visit family in New York. My brother –in- law treated us to a wonderful Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. We had a great time and after the show the calling from the great white throne beckoned throughout the building as the women’s line progressed clear around the hallway.
I once heard that women’s lines are so long at the bathroom because we take it with us. We stand up and announce, “Anyone want to go with me?” Anyway, noticing that there were no men waiting in line for the men’s room next to ours I looked back at the young women behind me. Simultaneously we both said, "We should all start going in the men’s room." I then suggested,“Ok, I’ll count to three and if you want to go with me, we’ll head that way.” On three she and I both walked towards the men’s room. We had not seen anyone enter it for a good five minutes, so we thought we were in the clear. As we walked in a man was walking out and said, “You can’t come in here!” “Is anyone else in here?” I replied. He said “No.” As I looked back a whole line of women came marching our way into the mens room. Elderly women were thanking me as well as children for having the courage to move on in.
Looking back I wonder why I am always so different and ready to do things no one else would even dare to do. I also was grateful that security didn’t take me by the scruff of the neck and challenge my position. Thinking on it now, I also remember a crazy thing I did as a young adult. I was in college and my roommate challenged me to ride the little kiddy horse outside a grocery store. She said “Jane, if you ride that I’ll give you twenty dollars. I thought to myself,” I need gas money to go home this weekend.” So jumping up on that pretty shiny pony I punched in my quarter and even sang “Home, Home on the Range!” People were coming out of the store, some laughing and some too prim and proper to even acknowledge my actions. Looking over at my roommate she was so surprised that I would take her up on the challenge. After all I am a pretty shy person for the most part, but desperate times lead to desperate measures. I wanted very much to go home for the weekend, so all the embarrassment I incurred was well worth it.
Now looking forward to going home, to my real home above I find myself still doing things others may shake their heads at. I’ve been accused of being too radical or too focused on spiritual things. I realize that I have joined a club of Upstream Swimmers. In the bible we can find many of God’s people unwilling to follow the natural current of life. Moses, Abraham, David, Solomon, Esther, John the Baptist, Paul, Stephen, Peter and on and on the list goes. All of these and more came to a crossroad in life where taking desperate measures and not choosing the norm or expected path became their right choice. I think of the scripture passage that refers to us, God’s people, as the peculiar ones.
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1Peter 2:9 KJV)
My prayer is that I would stand out among the normality’s of this world and draw many out of the darkness of life that has seemingly overcome them. As a child of God, be prepared for Him to ask you to not blend into the back drop of this world, but to be salt and light to this generation. The choice is yours: take the easy road and go with the flow of life’s current, or turn around and take the plunge into the upward stream. Oh yes, it is much more difficult and much more taxing, but I can vouch to say the rewards are out of this world!
