There was a man and his wife who retired to Miami, Florida. They had children that lived all across the world. One Christmas the couple wanted to see all of their children together, so they purchased tickets for every one of them. However, since it was the Christmas season, the tickets were very expensive. Moreover, the purchase price could not be refunded.

For their son in Ft. Lauderdale they purchased a bus ticket. For their daughter in New York, they purchased a train ticket. For their son in California and their daughter in Spain, they purchased airline tickets. They mailed the tickets to their children so they could all be together. The daughter in Spain gladly used the ticket her parents had bought for her. However, the son in Ft. Lauderdale decided to hitchhike home instead of taking a bus. He had never hitchhiked before and he thought it would be exciting. The daughter in New York decided she would rather drive herself instead of taking the train. However, because she lived in New York, she did not own a car and was not a good driver. The son in California decided he would drive himself because he would be able to stop by different places on his way to his parents and back. The parents could not understand why three of their children would act this way. After all, the tickets had already been purchased. All they had to do was use them.

The daughter who lived in Spain arrived on time and spent the holidays with her parents. However, the son who decided to hitchhike was left stranded during Christmas. He did not realize that a lot of people are wary of picking up hitchhikers. He was forced to walk the final part of his journey. The daughter who decided to drive from New York had an accident on her way down. Although she was unhurt, she had to spend Christmas Eve in an emergency room in North Carolina. The son who drove from California made too many stops along the way and missed Christmas. What do you think of these three? Absolutely foolish!

What does this mean to Christians? We can be as foolish as the three children to ignore the tickets their parents purchased for them. Like the son in Ft. Lauderdale we may think we can do it ourselves. Like the daughter in New York, we may be prideful to point of harming stubbornness. Like the son in California, we can get distracted from our goal. We can be the same way with God’s salvation. Jesus has already paid the price for us. He paid it in full. All we need to do is use it. All we need to do is accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. If we ignore the gift that Jesus had for us, we are foollish indeed.
