As we begin each day, we make assessments in order to wear the proper attire which will protect us from the external conditions we will face throughout the day. If it looks like rain, we’ll wear a raincoat or be prepared with an umbrella. If it’s cold, we’ll need a hat, gloves, and coat. If it’s sunny, we’ll need sunglasses and possibly sun block. All of these things are helpful in getting through the day, but none are even near adequate for the true conditions of life we will face.

We cannot simply take a peek out the window to see if our day will include the loss of our job, an illness, a broken relationship, the death of someone dear to us, or countless other situations. So how can we be equipped and prepared to face these struggles that are unforeseeable? The Scripture tells us in Ephesians 6: 13-17:

Use every piece of God’s armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the sturdy belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News, so that you will be fully prepared. In every battle you will need faith as your shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed at you by Satan. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Very few Christians take this directive seriously. We are told to “put the armor on.” We are to equip ourselves just as we would in picking up an umbrella to protect us from forecasted rain. The one piece of Armor that yields an extremely high return is the only piece of armor that is truly a “weapon,” and an “offensive” one at that. I am speaking of the Sword of the Spirit, God’s Word. Think about it, what if the football players on a team were fully suited up and yet they were only allowed to play defense. They’d never score! Offense is the key if you’re looking to get ahead in the game, even in the spiritual battle and in life! The Word of God can attack the enemy, not just shield you from him. When Jesus was tempted at His weakest moments, He was prepared, not in argument, but with the simple, yet all powerful words, “It is written.” And with that alone, Satan fled. When you learn to adequately use the Sword, you don’t have to take the blows to the rest of your armor that you would have otherwise had to endure, such as attacks on your faith and peace.

It can be quite exhausting to constantly be on the defensive side of your spiritual battles. The Word of God gives us the ability to score points, be a champion, a victor, an over comer.
