Character is what you are in the dark! -D.L. Moody


Imagine you are casually walking around the local grocery store just buying the essentials for an upcoming barbecue. You stroll up and down the aisles reaching for this and stretching for that. You grab the last sirloin and pursue the checkout up front. Right as you begin to place your items on the conveyor belt… BOOM, lights out! What’s the first thing you do? Surely you don't keep walking oblivious to the surrounding darkness all excited about that juicy tender steak you’re about to purchase! No way! You freak out! You panic! Something inside us, built inside us deep down says, uhh hey there’s something very wrong ‘what happened to all the lights?’! Why is it so natural for us to think that something is wrong when it’s dark? Well for one, 1 Thes 5:5 says, “You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.” Friends let me tell you that nothing can be clearer than the words, “…we do not belong…!” A grocery store blackout is freaky and should be, but there is one area in life that is practically numb to the poison of darkness… our relationships! So I guess the more important question becomes, why don’t we treat our relationships the same way we treat a grocery store blackout? A major factor to our lack of alarm is that almost every platform for this silent killer is simple and harmless but let us not forget that sin doesn’t just come knocking and pounding especially if it thinks it can get in through the back door! Take this short story for example, you and your significant other are walking along, holding hands, enjoying your time together, you end up over at her house watching a movie with of course the lights off for cinematic purposes, watching the show while simultaneously daydreaming about the beautiful brunet next to you then before you know it, the movie is over… it’s no secret what’s going through your mind at this point, temptation is real and if you think it’s no big deal, I promise you will be defeated by it! God is here to help and give you understanding! If you want to win you have to recognize the real enemy. You must recognize the dark as a very dangerous and devious enemy. Anyone that does not respect darkness will be consumed by it! Think about it! When do thieves come into homes? When do people get raped, murdered? When do dirty shows come on T.V.? When do most people make the biggest mistake of their lives? It happens every night around the world by the thousands! Satan absolutely loves the dark because of the darks ability to obscure reality. Our rationality, judgment, even beliefs and character are distorted when we place ourselves in darkness. A guarantee to a healthy relationship is to stay out of the darkness! This is a must in every mans life and a sure sign of spiritual leadership to your significant other!

How it relates to my walk with Christ…

If our relationship with Christ is ever going to grow or remain “pure”, then we must do our best to stay away from the bad stuff and to remain involved in the good stuff! If somewhere along the journey we find ourselves in the “bad stuff” or “darkness” then our goal is to immediately get out and into the “good stuff” or “light”! If darkness can wreck your walk with God you certainly can never allow it in a relationship! So when you and your girl accidentally or intentionally find yourselves in the dark, take it seriously, get out and turn the lights on! You will never ever regret it!

Prayer: Lord make me more aware of the deceit darkness has; give me strength to overcome its lure so that I can be the godly leader in my relationships!
