There is a lot to be said for having a place of refuge. Someplace to go alone to reflect, refresh and strengthen yourself away from the computer, the phone and the schedule.
For me, here and now, it is my back porch. Being outside in God’s world calms my soul and makes me feel closer to Him. It tweaks all my senses. I see nature at work and marvel at God’s provision for his creatures. There are colors to entertain my eyes. I smell the fragrance of flowers, fresh cut grass, and approaching rain. I hear birds singing and wind passing through the trees. I can feel the power of God in the wind; sometimes gentle as a lamb creating delicate sounds in wind chimes and aspen leaves; sometimes roaring like a lion and challenging every living thing to hold its ground. He is all and is in all.
We all need a back porch, a place of beauty and serenity, to pause, to take notice of the wonders of God’s creation all around us and hear how it speaks to us. We need to be quiet, to reflect on what we have and give thanks to Him, through whom all things come.
