Lightning Bolt Experience

I came into his room and introduced myself.
We made small talk until he asked about the guitar on my back.
He once played banjo and loved folk music, so I cut into "This Land is Your Land."
His fingers twitched as if he was playing along,
and I believe he returned to a happier time before his sickness.

I asked about his faith, and he said he was Jewish,
but he never practiced or prayed.
Instead, he said, "I was waiting for my lightning bolt experience."
I told him about my testimony in so many words,
paused-then with a still small voice, I said, "God loves you."

It caught him off guard.
His face responded as his fingers did when I played guitar.
He said, "I hope God loves me."
I started to move closer towards his bedside.
I placed my hand on his shoulder and replied,
"Oh, He does love you, and I see it's affecting you because your eyes are getting misty."

Just then, a single tear streamed down his cheek.
It was like I was in a maternity ward.
The room was electric.
Then I asked, "May I pray?" he replied in a quivery voice,
"Sure."
I told him the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the Messiah were drawing him closer.
At this, his face lit up, and with tears rolling down his cheeks,
he sheepishly smiled.

So, I reached out and shook his hand,
looked him in the eyes and said,
"I believe this was your lightning bolt experience!"
