“So the Jews answered and said to Him, ‘ What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?’
Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ Then the Jews said, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days ?’ But He was speaking of the temple of His body. John 2:18-21
The Jews were often blind to spiritual realities. They were tied to the conventions of their day and to what they could but see with their eyes and handle with their hands. The temple stood solidly before them, a building that had taken forty-six years to build and now, in their earth-bound understanding, they could only hear Jesus saying that if it were to be destroyed, He could miraculously rebuild it in but three days. (The ironic thing is that He could, but He had a much more important reality to share with them if they could but grasp it.)
The temple of His body would be destroyed by the hands of the very men who stood before Him but by resurrection power from on high it would be raised up in three days. This was all according to the divine plan for the salvation of souls and would be the final triumphant step in that plan. This declaration was lost on the poor souls before Him who could but see bricks and clay when they could have caught a glimpse of grace and glory.
