 Am I Good Enough?

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10 

     Mommas, this morning, I want you to grab your favorite coffee mug, pour in your favorite coffee, add the perfect amount of creamer, and find your favorite spot to sit down in to soak up your time with the love of your life: The Holy Spirit.
     So often, the devil will throw numerous amounts of coffee grounds into our “Am I good enough” cup of coffee. Remember that perfect cup you just made yourself? The devil ruined it because he could penetrate those pesky black dregs through the filter. We begin to doubt whether we are a “Good Enough” Momma because of his lies.
     Mommas, I will never forget the moments in my home when I reached my final breaking point (you ladies know about these). You know, those moments where coffee is not the solution? I’m talking about those moments where you’ve exhausted all of your back-pocketed tips and tricks you have picked up over the years to be the best Mother you can be, and you end up falling apart (my favorite place is the shower or bath). Yes, those moments. But, these moments I’m referring to are the moments the devil has finally ruined that cup of a silky, rich, smooth latte. He finally has you believing this job is not for you. He has overpowered the delicious cup: you start thinking you are not “good enough.” The comparisons from one mother to another begin, and the next thing you know, your cup is so full of grounds you are chewing your coffee instead of drinking it. Oh, Momma, we’ve all been there. Satan has triumphed over our cups, and we’ve had to dump them to start again.
     Take a sip as a reminder that you have your perfect cup of coffee right now. Remind yourself that there is a way to keep these grounds out. Stay with me.
     The Apostle Paul reminds us that “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” But, Mommas, let us focus on the part of the verse that says, “which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
     We are good enough, Mommas. We are good enough when we lose our “gentle and quiet spirit.” We are good enough when we do not plan the perfect birthday party or have all the perfectly planned holiday events. We are good enough when we do not have the cleanest home, or we choose to throw chicken nuggets in the microwave instead of fixing a 3-course meal. We are good enough. Do you know why? Because before we were crafted together in our Mother’s Womb, God prepared works for us; part of these planned works is our mothering journey. He chose us to be the mothers of our children. He chose us.
     The Scripture doesn’t say, “prepared in advance for us with no sin.” Mommas, we are human, and we will sin as we carry out the plans He has designed for us. Satan will use these opportunities to ruin our cups. He will creep in, dangling those grounds right above, waiting for our sinful nature to take over. But Mommas, our God’s Grace is bigger and stronger. Our God’s Grace helps us continue combating our sinful nature and allows us to continue to say “I am good enough because God created me to do good works, which He prepared ahead of time, and God is good.” Mommas, God is Good, and everything God has made is more than “Good Enough.”
     Mommas, YOU-ARE-GOOD-ENOUGH, even on the days you do not feel it. Take another sip of that perfect cup of coffee. Let us take a minute to praise God for protecting us from these pesky grounds of insecurity.
