“And you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.” John 5:35 (NRSV)

Father nothing is permanent. All things are passing; only you Lord, never change. Help us to make the most of the ‘little whiles.’ Those brief and soon to pass opportunities. Those moments to share your light; your love; your hope and grace. Prompt us to awaken to the now, to notice what you are doing in each moment and join you in your magnificent work.

Father remind us that our lives are a temporary assignment; the dress rehearsal to the grand event that will last for eternity. Keep us from filling our lives with the fleeting and trivial pursuits of this world. Remind us of what is truly important, what has lasting value. Forgive us for chasing after what will quickly pass like the morning mist. May we be grounded in the permanency of your presence and your Word.

We live among a people who are capricious and discontented. Our minds change as rapidly as the shifting of the ocean currents. Our attention is quickly diverted to the latest new thing. Teach us the joy of missing out on what everyone else is pursuing. Heavenly Father be our anchor. May our hearts be fixed on not what will last a little while, but on what will remain for eternity. Amen.

God’s people are to rejoice in Him not for a little while, but for eternity. What keeps us from being able to savor God’s presence continually? What might God be saying to us about this? Let’s consider small steps we can take today in order to continually rejoice in His light and love.
