You are only weeks away from moving into your new room in your new residence hall on campus. You are preparing yourself for college classes, all set to order thesis paper online, buying textbooks, notebooks, and all the other necessary school supplies – just like any other year.

But this year is different.

This year you not only have a class to prepare for, but you also need to stock up your new room. This is the room you will be living in for the next several months every day and night. It has to be a space to relax, a space to study and space to sleep. If it is not comfortable, you won’t enjoy it. Lucky for you, it is easy to make your room comfortable and not too expensive either. Here are my tips for making your new home a livable and comfortable space.

Your one-stop shop for everything you need

If you haven’t seen Campus Market (OCM) and their amazing collection of decor, essentials and other items for your on-campus experience, you need to go check it right away. This brand is partnered with many schools, but even if they are not with your school, you can still order from their website. They sell extra-long twin bedding, which you will need for most beds and they can be hard to find anywhere else. The bedding is just the starting point, they have so much more than you will fall in love with!

The Essentials: Bed & Bath Packs

OCM sells packs for your convenience of the essential bed and bath materials to save you money. They are at a discounted price than what it would cost if you bought things individually on their site. If you are just starting out, a pack is without a doubt the best buy since you likely need it all already. If you only need one or two items though, you may want to buy separately. I have all the items from last year, but I am buying a new pack to have fresh bedding on my bed. Prices range from $159 to $229, including everything from multiple sets of sheets, a reversible comforter, multiple towel sets, hampers, shower caddies and much more!

Décor: Wall Decals & Wall Canvas

If you want to decorate your room and add some color to your otherwise boring concrete walls, an easy hang wall canvas is a perfect solution. Put it behind your bed, on an open wall or anywhere you would like to spruce up your room’s look. Additionally, you can add wall decals and/or dry erase wall decals for your calendars, notepads, etc. right on your wall and saving space on your desk and table tops. These are all very affordable, averaging around $20 to $40 depending on your design and print.

Décor: Carpet Tiles

You will likely have a tile floor in your room already, which can be cold, covered with dirt and not ideal if you aren’t wearing shoes all the time. In order to be comfortable in your room, you want something over your boring tile and the answer is provided by OCM. New to the site is the addition of carpet tiles, which you can simply lay down on the floor, piece together in any pattern, and you have a fashionable carpet in your room that you can love. These are rather expensive, but for what you’re getting, it is worth it (and they can be taken up and reused next year). One pack of 12 2×2 feet tiles is currently (on sale) priced at $85. They say it will take 1 ½ to 2 boxes to cover an average sized room.

Décor: Carpet

If you aren’t thrilled about the carpet tiles or the price scares you off, you can get traditional rolled carpet for your room at the price of $65 for 4×6 feet or $85 for 6×9 feet. Rolled carpet will likely be more of a hassle, and for what little price difference there is, I would recommend going with carpet tiles (it will be easier to reuse the tiles as well).

There are plenty more products for you to browse, so many that it would be impossible to go through them all in an organized way. There are a lot of good sites and they have (nearly) all you need to make your dorm room feel like home!
