The resurrection of Jesus is the most central event in the Christian faith. It is what bridged us to God, washed away our sins, and justifies us before God. God must exert His wrath upon anything sinful and evil, which includes human beings; however, the resurrection of Jesus allows us to surpass the wrath of God. It gives us the ability to experience the love, grace, and mercy of our Creator. The resurrection also shows that Jesus defeated death, which we know that nothing in the physical world can prevent or reverse death. Thanks to Jesus's unrelenting love for the Father and us, he died so that we only had to experience death once and rest in our eternal life (Halloran, 2013).
The resurrection unites us all with Christ and each other, which validates the term "body of Christ." A great example given by Kevin Halloran is marriage. When a couple unites in marriage, the possession of each spouse belongs to each other. Just as our unification with Christ, we can receive the righteousness of Christ because of our "spiritual marriage" with him (Halloran, 2013). It is incredible how blessed we are when we reflect on the resurrection. We receive many gifts including eternal life, yet without Christ dying for us, we would not have any access to those gifts that God has graciously given us. Ultimately, we do not deserve any blessings, but our Father is a loving God.
Another reason the resurrection of Jesus is crucial to the Christian faith is that it confirms God's Truth all throughout the Old Testament. Isaiah prophesizes the death of Christ in the Old Testament. It also reflects the power of the resurrection:
"Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities" (Isaiah 53:10-11, KJV).
The New Testament also verifies the resurrection and how the gospels depend on it. Paul defends the truth of the resurrection when writing to the Corinthians:
"But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ not be risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because when we testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ not be raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished" (1 Corinthians 15:13-18, KJV).
It is not only a fundamental part of the gospel, but it is the glue that holds it all together. Without the resurrection, we as Christians have nothing to live for, but Christ rose from the dead which gives us hope of having our sins forgiven, being made right in God's sight, and being able to enjoy eternal life through Christ (Halloran, 2013).
The resurrection has many meanings and gives us many privileges: the Holy Spirit, a living hope, being raised like Jesus, and knowing that Christ will judge the world in righteousness (Halloran, 2013). The resurrection is not just the foundation of our faith, but it will finish our faith when the Kingdom is complete. It gives us more than just hope; it can deepen our faith because all the truth and facts are laid out before our eyes. The resurrection is the reason why we can reconnect with God after sin entered the world. We do not have to sacrifice animals anymore, and if we still had to, I imagine many species would be extinct due to all the sin in the world that the innocent blood would need to cover. Without any sacrifices, we would not be able to stand before God, but thankfully His intelligence and His perfection surpass any understanding that we could imagine. His ways are what builds our faith so we can have a relationship with the Father that our spirit longs for every day.
