Faith

Today, rather than starting off with a quote from the Bible, I want to share a quote from a song called Common Sense by one of my favorite artists of all time, John Prine. In the song he says "It don't make no sense that common sense don't make no sense no more."

As you ponder that, also ponder the fact that our religious and spiritual lives are sometimes confusing. We seem to try to do the right thing and it doesn't work. We strive to believe in someone and something we can't see. We read in the Bible of miraculous events and ask how did that happen. Sometimes it's hard to make sense of it all.

This morning I was reading Matthew 1 where Mary, as a virgin, became pregnant with Jesus. As a man, I naturally put myself in Joseph's place wondering how he felt. Here was a good man who was a descendant of King David and in love with a wonderful Godly woman. And then, without any action on his part, she becomes pregnant. That would have been very tough to swallow I think. And then probably after thinking and worrying and questioning his fiancé as to who the other guy was, he tried to go to sleep to quit thinking of it. But then he had a dream and an angel visited him and told him not to worry. So which is the bigger deal, an angel visiting you or the angel telling you not to worry!

Joseph might have said, "Yea right, here my fiancé is pregnant by who knows who and now I have an angel coming to see me telling me the Holy Spirit of God has made my fiancé pregnant and don't worry about it. And what is he talking about when he said that my son would save the people from their sins. This doesn't make sense".

And he was right. It doesn't make sense to us. But to God, well that's a different story. God knew exactly what he was doing and how to do it. It was and still is all in his plan. And sometimes we just have to accept the fact that it doesn't make sense to us. That's called faith. The Bible in Hebrews 11:1 says faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith doesn't make much sense to the scientific or non Christian world.

But to us who believe the Bible is truth, we see the benefits of faith every time we wake up and look in the mirror. We see a miracle that somehow does make a little sense. And if we look real hard we might see a little of Joseph and Mary in each of us.
