“My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.” Psalm 119:120
I’m always amazed that people actually pay money to go on a roller coaster rides! Why do people pay to put themselves through such frightening experiences? Is it because there is something in human nature that seeks a thrill in the experience of being out of control, a feeling of breathlessness or a feeling of being small in a big universe.
Perhaps it’s the reason that years ago people built such enormous cathedrals. They wanted to capture the sense of smallness before an awesome God. They wanted their breath taken away my something much greater and grander than they. They wanted to feel lost in the presence of a holy God.
My thoughts are prompted by an article called, “To Shudder Properly” by Michael Frost. Michael feels that Christians need to regain the sense of the awesomeness of our God.
Where did we lose the sense of the awesomeness of God? Perhaps we lost it when we began to think of God as our buddy and forgot what it cost Him so we could enter His presence without fear. Or perhaps we became distracted with programs and meetings and lost sight of God’s holiness.
We need to realise that a roller coast ride and the like may be fun but it will never satisfy the deep need we have to tremble in the presence of a holy God.
