Well, the short answer to that little question is that we all need friends. The deepest, most fundamental need of the human species is the need to belong – the feeling that he or she is not shut off from human contact. Of course there are some who seem to thrive on isolation, and just wish to be left alone. Then there are others who are lonely because of their circumstances over which they have no control, such as the death of a husband or wife, a family member, or a close friend. Also there are those such as the elderly, those who often feel abandoned, rejected and forgotten, with nothing but their memories to live with

That is why solitary confinement is the cruellest punishment that can be inflicted on anyone. The awful loneliness they are subjected to does more to shatter the victim’s resoluteness than all the physical torture they may suffer. But loneliness is more than solitude, for we can still be lonely even when we are in the midst of a crowd, or on a busy street.

So, what a joy it is to be able to share our most intimate thoughts, feelings and problems with those we are truly comfortable with. Then with the passing of time the bonds grow stronger and our friendships will become the most precious possession we have – worth far more than money, success, or any material thing. If we are honest with ourselves most of us will admit that one of life’s most treasured gifts is the comforting knowledge that we have friends to turn to in times of suffering or sadness. It is in the troublesome adversities in life we need the reassuring shelter of true friendship.

However, if we are complacent with others, taking and not giving, we will soon be without friends. The Biblical assertion “Give, and it will be given unto you” is absolutely true. It is the underlying principle of the natural harvest of the earth – sowing and reaping. It is the moral and spiritual principle in our journey through life.

Extend to others the hand of friendship, for those friends will comfort us when we are sorrowful or lonely. They will sustain us when we are ready to give in. To share our lives with friends good and true is a priceless blessing for it means that not only will they be there for us when life seems to be falling apart, but also for when we want to share with them life’s most memorable and joyous moments.
