Seeking the sleep butterfly
With wings outstretched and beckoning
Frames a star
Amidst a field of blue
Fading into black
Eyes like drifting dandelion seed
Where are you precious peace?
The peace that brings to rest
The weariness that grows with
Dispirited existence
Within day times
Seldom unfolding as dreamed
Hopes wavering past those
Hopes that never made it
Into aspirations

The traffic is daunting and stifled
As the humid air that permeates
The turmoil of toss and turn
Pop another pill
And watch the reel of memory
Process and churn
Round and round
Wringing in the sounds
Of crunching leaves
Barely heard
Beneath the shrill of traffic and screeching tires
Sirens ringing like night bells
But not on a church

The silent night songs begin to play
Gotta sleep, sleep
Tomorrow is another day
Can't count sheep
Just sleep already, just sleep
Eyes squeezed tight
In reminiscence of agonies
That steal the day time away
The work that won't get done
Or drags on with the sleeplessness that goes on
And the life that never gets lived

Many wonders are about this
Is it a brain drain?
Or illness?
Or just genius untapped?
It doesn't matter
Because it plays over and over again
And then it's another day
Unsolved and looking back
So much has been lost
So many lives that touched
Now gone
They go on wondering about worth
Wishing the sleep butterfly
Would touch thy life
