Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday November 24, 2009

The media reports that the most used "new" word for 2009 is "Unfriend." I did not pay much attention when I read about this grand new word, for I am still trying the learn many of the old tried and true ones. This all changed early this (Monday) morning.

Due to the meddling of some miniature wannabe psychologist, I came face to face with "Unfriend" at 3:00 AM. Many strange things confront you at this time of morning when even werewolves and vampires are getting ready to go to bed. This "unfriend" put a fear into my heart far exceeding in pain any confrontation with either of the aforementioned creatures.

Mr. or Mrs. perhaps even Ms. in spite of my plea noted on former letters, "Do NOT FWD this to The Great Blonde" with little or no regard for my marital bliss or even my very life, did in fact forward not just one but every one of my letters from last week. You can only imagine my current dwelling place but the smell of brimstone hangs in the air.

I never know just how the Nordic Wonder, (this term really set her off) will come at me, though I have studied the film from previous encounters, to no avail. She is a master who makes the legend who bragged about "moving like a butterfly and stinging like a bee" fade into rank amateurhood.

I usually check the world of facebook early just to get the old brain moving after listening to a recording of my Sunday message, which can be mind numbing, so imagine my jolt when I was ripped from this stupor by the notice that I, Larry The Great, have been UNFRIENDED. You guessed by whom. Not only hell, but the entire underworld hath no fury like the Great Blonde when she takes umbrage.

Over the course of my time on earth I have lost friends, been outgrown by friends even ostracized by friends. One referred to me as a former friend, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect this. But life does have its little surprises. I can assure you the word "Unfriended" feels like a horse kicked you in the belly at 3:00 A.M. Having been kicked in the belly by a Belgian work horse I do know the feeling and it comes close to the current trauma. I remember my Second Grade teacher who upon the announcement of her marriage over the weekend attempted to comfort me with, "Larry, we can still be just friends." Even that horrible experience pales in comparison to being Unfriended. Why on earth would anyone invent such a cruel and unusual word?

I take some comfort in the words of my Lord in John 15:15: Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
