It is interesting to note that we don’t find a lot of peer pressure among the very young and the very old. They are too busy with the details of just living to get caught up in that. It may also be that they are more aware of what really matters. Being at the beginning of life or the end of life has a way of doing that!
It is those of us “in between” who are affected by peer pressure. Life has smoothed out for us and we are coasting along, when out of the blue, we come up against a situation that requires an important choice and often our decisions are affected by what others are expecting of us. This is peer pressure.
Peer pressure can be positive. The Bible teaches that the company we keep will affect us. If we walk with wise men, we will be wise. If we spend time with God, we will become more like Him. This principle works the other way as well. If we spend time and energy in worldly pursuits, with worldly people, we become more worldly.
The key to a Christian’s success is to make God our Audience. When faced with peer pressure, keep in mind that “If God is for us, who can be against us?” When experiencing this “pressure“, we need to look up. Seek His face. If we strive to please God, make Him our audience, He will one day be able to say those words we all long to hear, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”! This is whom a Christian lives to please. His applause is all that will matter in the end.
