Whether it is Iraq with its increasing battles of Fallujah, Iran and their need for ownership of nuclear testing, or the genocide of Sudan, the list continues to grow daily. We can search the America’s and see the waste of their people: Appalachian children suffering silently amidst the wealth, and Brazil’s homeless street urchins learning the lessons of “survival of the fittest” by the time they are four. There isn’t a state in this world that doesn’t possess a hunger within its people, a need to be affirmed as worthy of God’s love, seeking a peace that comes from the generosity of others.
For a good sense of how desperate the world’s people are for peace, study the volunteer mission work accomplished through the sacrifices of thousands every year. Surely, when a truckload of supplies is delivered, the people fight to be given a handful of flour, but it’s quickly gone and the hunger remains. What they truly seek is peace from the horror of their lives.
Giving food is like applying a band aid to an ulcerated foot: the infection fills the band aid and increases if the wound isn’t properly treated “for the long haul”. Such is the hunger within this world. We need more than a band aid for this agonizing majority as a cumulative desperation is growing with each passing day. The masses require delivery of more than staples; they hunger from the very depths of their soul for a menu of peace.
Scripture says, “To whom much is given, much shall be required”; when will we believe this problem belongs to more than the masses, that it is ours to own, as well?
