When the rains of Ivan hit our area and the rivers rose and washed over the roads and bridges, the higher up the mountain you lived, the better off you were.
In the fall, as the leaves change color, a trip across the mountain is an explosion of color that along with the coolness of the breeze bring back great memories of my childhood.
And there have been many a winter mornings that I have looked at the snow and ice covered mountain roads between me and my destination and thought, "if I had the faith of a mustard seed."
It is easy for most of us to equate mountains with problems. We look at those things in our life that are challenges and see mountains, obstacles that need to be climbed, conquered, or removed. And yet if it were not for mountains, we would never have mountaintop experiences. If it were not for the challenges of this life, we would never know the excitement and exhilaration of overcoming the difficulties of living.
Living in the valley means that I have to climb over the mountain to get anywhere. If I go east, west, north, or south, I sooner or later have to climb a large mountain. I have to deal with the mountains or never leave home.
Mountains are gifts from God. And like any gift, we only get to enjoy its blessings when we accept it and share it with others.
