She gasped. “What do you mean, dead?”
“Killed by a boy in the Valley of Elah, an Israelite boy from the Israelites’ army. Yes, it is true,” he said and looked away. “Our son’s body now lies lifeless on the ground, and the army of the Israelites has routed our army. Not many of us survived.”
She shuddered. “No, no, not my Golie, not my son. How could Dagon the god of Philistines allow this to happen? Isn’t he more powerful than all other gods? Was he sleeping or on vacation? she said bitterly. She held her fist in the air and screamed as she looked up to the heavens. “Why, Golie, why my son? How can a mere boy kill such a mighty warrior?”
“With a sling and a stone, the boy dropped our son flat on his face,” Anak said. “Then, with haste, he cut off his head with his sword.”
She cringed with disgust. He cut off his head with Golie’s own sword? Oh, the shame, the shame. Our Golie, taken down by a mere boy with a simple stone. How can this be?” she said with a bellowing voice as she hammered her large fist on the table in front of her, splintering it to pieces.
Anak let out a heavy sigh. “I believe the God of the Israelites is mighty. He showed his might to all through a young boy who boldly stepped out alone and spoke courageously when no one else dared. The lad cried out victoriously against the army of the Philistines and showed no fear.
She sobbed. “Who is this God of the Israelites who enables young boys to defy giants?”
I do not know, but I do know we must go now to retrieve our son’s body to prepare it for burial before the birds have their feast.
But what about his head? What good is a body without a head?
He growled. “Do not cry this nonsense any longer, woman. We must be strong and bury our son, head, or no head.”
“But, where is his head?”
“Last I saw, the boy was carrying it. Perhaps as a trophy to present to their king Saul.”
Oh, what shame, what shame. A Philistine commander, a mighty warrior, our son… gone forever.
Yes, it is a tragedy. But come now. We must go and prepare his grave. It will take a good full day to dig a hole big enough.
