He would probably be considered a quiet man with strong convictions. He made Jesus Lord of his life shortly before he married my mother, and he didn’t take the change in his life lightly. He served on church boards most of his adult life, and made sure his children were grounded in the Scriptures.
I remember one church business meeting where the need for a bus was presented. Bussing children and a few adults was an effective church outreach at that time. If I remember correctly, a suitable bus had already been located. A fair amount of attendees were definitely for the proposal. However, there were several that were definitely not for it, citing that the church could not afford it at that time. Pros and cons were thrown back and forth for a period of time. Then, Daddy, who had been relatively quiet up to that point, stood to his feet and said, “Since money seems to be the issue here, let’s take written pledges right now. Those who think we should get the bus can put their money where their mouth is.” His proposal was enacted and the church soon had the bus they needed to bring more boys and girls to Sunday School!
When I graduated from High School I hoped to go to college. Money was tight. I was thinking that I would have to work a year before going. One evening I overheard Dad tell my mother, “I really want to see her go to college this fall. If she sits out a year, she may never go.” Along with his sacrifice and a couple of small scholarships my dream was realized. The young man that was to become my husband was a senior that year. If I had not gone that fall, I would have missed him!
When my husband and I started our own business, Dad (along with Mom) came along side to buy stock and do odd jobs to help us get on our feet. He wasn’t always professional, but he was conscientious and dependable.
Dementia robbed him of quality of life his last two years. My heart ached when our caregiver roles were reversed. Not long ago I saw a meme on facebook that asked, “If you could sit with anyone on this bench and chat for a couple of hours, who would it be?” Dad was high on the list. Thanks Dad, for being the hero that deserved the admiration of a little girl!
