At times, I feel my spirit flying inches above the majestic waters of the Danube River. My nostrils fill with the cool, refreshing mists of evaporated water and I smell fresh spring air as flowers bloom and new birth bursts forth. My eyes can almost see and enjoy the glorious blues, calming greens and the shocking bursts of white - as the fast racing flow rushes headlong through a tight bend along the way. I dream of playfully dancing, swirling and skipping as the violins cause my imagination to join in the whirling water as it churns and whips along an exhilarating journey. A good orchestra, playing the Blue Danube Waltz, can take me on a wonderful flight of fancy.
At other times, my mind enjoys a quiet stroll in nature as reed and stringed instruments transport me out into the fresh air. Trees are playfully waving to me in a gentle sway as an imagined breeze moves their leaves. Deer and rabbits run through these woods without a care in the world, bouncing and leaping over fallen logs and down smooth, grassy slopes. Then their faces turn curiously at a strange sound as tension fills the air… building… building… maybe sign of a coming storm. Then it’s no longer a warning but mind-blowing reality as I’m whisked into the middle of a crazy all-out war. Clashing, alarming sounds suddenly fill the air and my heart jumps as cannons roar and church bells ring out their alert. Some famous conductors have used real weapons and bell towers in their performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
Yet again I may be off and running right out of the starter gates; head down, heels kicking and tightly holding onto the reins as the William Tell Overture blasts into my ears. As if running from a horde of ravaging wolves, I struggle to stay in the saddle as my horse takes flight. Leaping over fences and racing full speed down gravelly hillsides, we risk life and limb in a helter skelter race to safety… not knowing if we will get there. And when I feel as if shelter is just around the corner… we are off again as trumpets fill the air with excitement. We sprint for our lives down a washout, along a dry riverbed and up the other side. “High Oh Silver” and a sigh of relief as we ride into the sunset. At last safe and secure, we are ready to tune up again for the next melody.
Music I love it. But by far my favorite time is when I nestle closely into my Heavenly Father’s arms. That’s when I know a real sense of security and peace, as warm compelling voices transport me into the Throne Room of God and remind me of how “Amazing Grace” saved me from eternal damnation. A sinner lost and cast adrift in raging seas, I was drowning in life’s acidic flow… caught in its current of sin, powerless in its soul-destroying effect upon everything it touches… lost, alone helpless and hopeless. But then… “Amazing Grace” opened my eyes, saved a wretch like me and set me free.
Music… I love it… but not as much as I love the Creator of it all. God, the One who waltzes with me above the raging waters. My champion in the battles thrown by a challenging world. The One who keeps me firmly seated in the saddle of life’s fast carousel. But above all, the provider of “Amazing Grace.”
