Cara had designed it all, down to the very last detail. For example, it would have pets, music from the 40’s, and an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. There would be barber shops for the men, beauty salons for ladies, libraries, and a beautiful open skylight, to bring in natural lighting. This would be conducive to those especially, who suffered from “sun-downers” syndrome. The lights would turn on at night, and the skylight would be lit in such a way that it would seem like the sun was still out.
The addition would be idyllic bringing a sense of peace to both residents and family members.
Cara was creating a great following in terms of her ideas, and all staff members seemed to be on board, all but one. Jenna, who wanted to be the head of everyone, and was going to accomplish said goal, even if she had to “walk over bodies” in the process.
“Cara, so you’re ready for the big day, again?”
“Yes, Jenna I am.”
This wasn’t the first time Cara tried to make a proposition to those who could provide funds to help it come to fruition. In fact, it was the tenth. But, Cara wouldn’t give up.
Each time she had such a meeting set up…huge insects would invariably pop up, stifling the presentation. Cara was petrified of insects, and Jenna knew that. No one could prove it was Jenna, but deep down Cara suspected it was her.
“Okay, well…if you fail this time, I think that’ll be it for your reputation. After all, who likes to see a grown woman fleeing in fear all the while screaming running down the corridor.” She laughed out loud, and turned to Cara. “I hope you bring it home this time, but somehow…well, good luck.”
Cara was ashamed of herself for what she was thinking and asked God to forgive her. After all, this was a Christian nursing home, and she was a Christian.
“Good morning everyone, thank you all for coming. Some of you have been here before and been witness to my hysteria at having huge black water bugs pop out of my attaché case. I apologize, again, for that ridiculous scene. Now without further ado, let me explain why I think that the Alzheimer population, will not only benefit from this glorious addition, but they will in fact thrive in this environment.”
Cara saw Jenna’s smirk, even though she sat far in the back of the room. It was there, pasted on her face.
Marsha, the night RN supervisor entered the meeting. “Excuse me Cara, so sorry to intrude. But there are five additional people who wish to be a part of this. In fact, they’re on their way to a children’s event…but insisted on stopping by here. They may be helpful and might be able to bring purpose to this project.”
Cara agreed readily, “Sure, no problem. The more the merrier. Plus, we all know each other here. Nothing formal, right folks?"
Mumbling and some laughter came forward.
As she said that, two bugs appeared out of nowhere, crawling by Cara’s feet. She closed her eyes, silently praying. “No please God, not again. Please give me the strength, and take this fear from me. Please, this is a matter of helping your children, widows, and widowers alike. Please, take this fear from me, as there is no fear in perfect love. Take it from me Lord, in Jesus name, amen.”
When Cara opened her eyes, she felt peace. Grabbing a tissue, she picked up the insects, and placed them in a cup, quickly covering it.
Jenna flipped her hair, while watching Cara through narrowed eyes. She bit her lower lip tasting blood.
Cara knew, that based on Jenna’s mannerisms, she planted the bugs, yet again.
The door opened, as Marsha, ushered in the individuals who wanted to attend the meeting.
A blood curdling shriek rang out! Jenna, tripped several times, while pushing others out of the way, dropping her computer, and purse in the process. Her heels hitting the tiled floor, as she fled the scene, reverberated throughout the corridor.
“What happened to that young woman?” One of the late comers asked.
Marsha answered through a huge smile, “Jenna is petrified of clowns…”
