Think about a book cover. It can be a tired, old paperback or a vibrant, glossy hardback, both producing stories of fear, romance, and joy within its numerous pages!
How many times has a book changed your life?
Dieters need encouragement to lose weight, (check out Lysa Terkeurst's "Made to Crave"); doctors need answers to patient dilemmas; pastors need a revelation from God, and students need assistance in cramming for an exam. They can find answers in books. These literary hand-held collections, add noteworthy quality and pleasure to our daily lives.
Of course, in today's age, you can use the Internet to find almost everything, however, there is just something special about holding a book of your own, in your hand, and sitting down to read it. It's yours, you control it, and you can yell at it, love it, or give it away. You can reap its rewards by following instructions, praying for wisdom, or memorizing its truths.
Chameleons change colors to charm another nearby. How many times will a good romance novel change our attitudes, make us cry, or give us hope in our relationships? Max Lucado's, "Be Anxious for Nothing" inspires us to turn our backs on anxiety and keep calm during trials and tribulations. The "Dummy Series" books have helped countless people learn how to…play football, master the computer, repair a car engine, how to read, or even how to find a date. You name it...there is a book for it.
Chameleons reveal different colors when they are aggressive or angry, depending on which mood they are in. Similarly, we reach for just the right book to read depending on how we feel.
If there has been a loss in the family, we can read, "Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul."
Need some uplifting? Try "Stick a Geranium in your Hat and Be Happy," by Barbara Johnson.
If we long for a closer walk with God, hundreds of devotionals tailored for each genre, are available.
Have a taste for something new? "The Pioneer Woman Cooks," by Ree Drummond, will give you the latest scrumptious recipes.
Feeling nostalgic? Have a cup of tea while skimming over poetry by Walt Whitman or Emily Dickenson.
For children and adults of all ages, how many of you have read traditional favorites like, "Charlotte's Web", "Goodnight Moon", or the "Chronicles of Narnia" to your kids at bedtime? Whatever circumstance or mood you are in, a well-versed therapy provides satisfaction.
Next time, you feel a yearning to go on a literary treasure hunt, skip over all those technological gadgets, and seek out a good book. Think of the ever-changing chameleon and enjoy the diversity of all the incredible options available in your local book store!
