“Nana, can we read the magical book?” she begged as she looked up with eyes wide as saucers that could melt any heart.
”Sure, sweetie,” Nana replied as she pulled off her sudsy gloves. “These dishes can wait a bit. Let’s go over to the big chair.” She sat down and cozied herself as Sarah nestled beneath her right arm.
“What is so magical about this book?” asked Nana.
Sarah’s left eye squinted which lifted her cheek up as she thought. She said, “It… it… takes us to places that have a lot of colors.” She paused then huffed out a breath. “And the stories are always different.”
“Yes,” Nana replied.
Sarah’s mom, Corie, interrupted Nana. “Mom, I need your help. The movers arrived earlier than planned.” Her arms were overstuffed with clothes on hangers; she motioned toward the door.
Nana got up and said, “Sarah, I need to help your mom. That’s why I came here, to help with the move. I need to pack your book to take it to your new house.”

After everything moved from the old house to the new one, Sarah pressed Nana. “Can we read a story now?”
“Not yet. There’s more work to do. How about you go to your new room and decide which animals to put on your bed?”
“Okay,” and she scampered off; her feet shuffled fast on the tile—.whoosh-whoosh—as she hurried down the hallway.
Nana headed to her car to fetch the box on the back seat—-with the magical book inside. When she looked in the box the book was no longer there. Where did the book go? I know I put it in this box, she thought heavy-hearted. She looked all around the backseat, and around the floor, but the magical book was gone. Sarah will be heartbroken.

It was almost bedtime when Sarah asked, “Nana, can you read to me from the magical book?”
“Oh, sweetie. I have some bad news. I cannot find your book.”
Sarah started to cry; she continued long after her night prayers.

“Mom, why don’t you check the Internet. Maybe you can buy a new one, Corie suggested.
“Good idea,” Nana said as she grabbed her laptop and searched. Just two sites appeared—each indicated ‘Out of Stock.’ “Well that was no help,” she huffed under her breath.
The next day, with her right index finger on her lip, and puppy dog sad eyes, unhurried, Sarah took a book from the bookcase. Turtles would have reached the big chair faster than Sarah. As she headed to the chair where Nana was seated; her chin just about dragged across the floor. Everything about that day was in slow motion for Sarah.
She snuggled up to Nana who captured her into the nook of her arm and inched Sarah closer to rest. Sarah had fallen asleep so Nana carried her to bed.
Nana headed to the car for the house-warming gift for Corie which she had placed under the driver’s seat. She grabbed the package and noticed frayed floor fibers; the floor cover had torn.
Her right hand patted down the area. She felt something; she traced a lump—it was a rectangle. She lifted the torn material, placed her hand on the rectangle and yanked it into view. Well I’ll be. How did it get in here? Dumbfounded, but grateful, she hurried inside with a lilt in her step.
“Hi, Nana,” Sarah said when she walked into the living room as she rubbed her eyes.
“Did you have a nice nap?”
“Yeah, but I’m still sad that my favorite book is gone.”
“Well, I have some news that will cheer you up.” She pulled the book out from behind a pillow. “TA DA!”
“Oh, Nana!” she squealed. “You found my book!” She grinned from ear to ear which exposed the gap of her lost tooth. She jumped up, squeezed Nana around the neck, and then kissed her cheek.
“I think your book went on an adventure of its own. Somehow it grew legs and jumped out of the box where I packed it. It tucked itself snug-like-a-bug under the floor mat.
Sarah cuddled into Nana’s lap as they opened the book to see what magical adventures awaited them for the next few hours.
