By now her blue SUV was the only vehicle in that section of the parking lot. As she approached she pressed the remote and saw the lights flash twice. She lifted the rear door and placed her groceries inside. As she reached up to close the door she felt something cold and hard pressed against the back of her neck.
“Don’t scream or make a sound, lady, just give me the remote and get into the passenger seat. Try anything funny and I’ll blow your brains out.” For a moment Mary considered screaming but then she heard the man cock the pistol. “I mean it, lady, just get in and pretend nothing’s wrong. We’re out shopping together.”
Terrified Mary did as she was told. The man climbed into the driver’s seat and started the engine. He moved slowly out of the parking area and headed into the late evening traffic, his pistol still in his one hand. “I see kids toys on the back seat – you got kids?”
“I have a daughter. Who are you? Where’re you taking me?”
“Call me Ben. Haven’t decided where to go yet, but relax, we gonna have some fun.”
Mary’s mind started racing. Wasn’t it somewhere in Arizona that a serial killer was raping and murdering women? I’ve got to get out of here somehow – my phone, I’ve still got my cellphone in my handbag. Must get into my handbag.
Mary started sobbing. “Stop that – no need to cry. If you behave you may just see your daughter again. If you don’t…”
“I need a Kleenex; they’re in my bag – can I get one?”
He glanced quickly at her. Mary gave a loud sniff and clutched her nose with her hand. “Okay get a Kleenex, but no tricks.”
Mary opened her bag and felt for her phone, which she wrapped in a Kleenex and quickly removed from her bag. Placing the phone on the seat on her right-hand side she blew her nose loudly. With her other hand she pressed her mother’s speed dial number. Once the phone was answered her plan was to speak to her abductor in a manner that would indicate that she was in trouble. She knew she was clutching at straws, but what else could she do?
She pressed the button, then waited. Faintly above the noise of the diesel engine and the other traffic she heard the busy tone. Damn, who is Mom talking to at this hour? I’ll try my boss, James Bridges. She moved to the next speed-dial number and pressed the button; hardly breathing. Beep-beep. Busy again. Desperate now, she tried the last number she had on speed-dial, her ex-husband, Justin. She pressed the button, knowing this was her last chance.
To her horror a recorded voice filled the cabin. “The subscriber you have dialed is not available, please try again later.” Ben slammed on the brakes and pulled over to the side of the road. “What’ye think you’re doing?” he screamed. “I told you no funny business.” Opening his door he grabbed her arm and pulled her across the seats and out of the driver’s door. The roadside was deserted and she could see a clump of trees nearby. Ben proceeded to drag her towards the trees.
Too terrified to scream, she allowed herself to be flung to the ground. “I warned you, but you didn’t listen, now you’ll never see your daughter again.” She saw him point the gun at her chest and heard a loud explosion. Then her attacker was on top of her. Has he shot me? Is he going to rape me? In a reflex movement, she pushed him hard and, to her surprise, he rolled over and lay still on the ground. Then she heard another voice. “It’s okay, lady, Ben Barnes won’t rape or kill anyone again.” A tall figure appeared in front of her. “I’m Jim Carstens, a police reservist. I saw you getting into the car with this guy and things didn’t look right, so I followed you. Guess it’s your lucky day.”
“Just how lucky can one get?” she said before bursting into tears.
