She turned on the computer, and went online to her email diary. Every few days she sent an email to an imaginary online friend she’d created using a made-up name and email address. Somehow that made her feel less alone and isolated.
“Dear Jesse,” she wrote. “Thank you for listening to my sad and dreary story all these months. This will be my last email to you. John finally made good on his threats to slander me in court and take the children. They’re gone now, and I am alone. Nobody believed me when I told them about the abuse and the lies and the other women. Now I know why. I was set up from the beginning. That’s what I get for marrying a lawyer.”
“He told me not to think about leaving the country; that he would track me down and drag me back to the States. He has threatened me with jail if I try to run. I live in terror of what he will do next.”
“But tonight I am going to a place where he cannot reach me. There is nothing left for me to live for. So I am going to put myself out of my misery."
"I am in so much pain! I feel like a bomb has exploded in my chest – I feel hollow and every nerve in my body feels like it is on fire. I can’t believe that I am not sitting in a pool of my own blood.”
Marjorie took a handful of pills and washed them down with bottled water.
“But soon I will have escaped at last. I thought about the gun, but I don’t have any bullets. I do have ten bottles of pills, but I don’t think I’ll need them all. I just need to swallow enough of them before I pass out…”
“Goodbye Jesse.” Then she hit Send. Marjorie sat for a few moments. She took some more pills. Then she started to get up, already feeling faint and dizzy.
Suddenly a small chat screen popped up on the computer screen. Marjorie stepped back in surprise as she read it. “Marjorie, Jesus loves you, and you are not alone. Please choose life.”
Marjorie stood paralyzed with shock at the unexpected message and then passed out cold. When she woke up, she was on a gurney and EMS technicians were pushing it into an ambulance.
“What happened?” she mumbled. “Who called the ambulance?”
“An email you sent tonight triggered a terror alert with your email provider, Ma’am. An administrator had already flagged your account because of a fake email profile and was on duty. She has relatives in this town, and luckily didn’t hesitate to call us. Your doors were unlocked, so we got to you right away. I’d say somebody upstairs was looking out for you.”
“Oh, God,” moaned Marjorie. “I’m so sorry.” Then she began to cry.
As the ambulance carried her to the hospital, one technician worked to stabilize her blood pressure and breathing while the other one held her hand and comforted her.
“It’s going to be alright, Missy. Just hang in there. God has a plan for you – a good plan. Don’t give up. Your children will need you someday. You will need to be there for them.”
Marjorie tried to focus her eyes, but his face was a blur.
“Are you an angel?”
“No,” the technician grinned. “But I am a part-time pastor. Come to church, Miss. It will give you hope. I promise you will find your way with God as your partner.”
Marjorie drifted off again and when she woke up she was in the hospital. There were some flowers by her bed from a church. A Bible was also by her bed with an invitation to visit the church, which she eventually did.
It was there that she realized she really did have a future. She’d never needed an imaginary friend, and that she’d never been alone. All she ever really needed was to reach out to Jesus, His Church and His Word.

This story brought tears to my eyes. I think all of us have felt alone in the world at some point in our lives.
