I told Josiah not to do it. Begged him, really. He was no match for those big city
guys. I knew it would come down to this, but Josiah always did walk to the beat of a different drummer . . . that and he was a stubborn old coot.
Well, like I said, I did my best to talk sense into him. He just kept listening to some preacher in his head and look where it got him. A good six feet under. Josiah left me and the guys all confused about why he did what he did. Now all we have to show for his craziness is a worn out Bible and a few old journals he kept up on the mountainside. A lot-a good that's going to do him now.
Hmm, where is that journal he left me? Ah, yes, here we go.

Oh, Lord God of Wonder, thank you for keeping me safe in that fierce storm you unleashed last night. I thank you for watching over an old man like me. I can't help but think my time is coming soon when I'll join you in paradise. Please, let there be something I can do, something I can say to my buddies that will help prepare them for eternity with you.
Also, as you see fit, could you send someone up here to help me move that pine that fell in the storm? It's kinda sittin' on my garden and I sure could use some help moving it. Thanks.

Why, ain't that something? I did that. I hiked up there the next morn' with some fresh trout and helped him move that tree off of his tomato plants. Ha! He probably thinks it was God. And it was just me. Ha! Boy, he sure was mixed up, the poor fellow.

Dear Lord,
Those men were back today, looking for trouble. I told 'em once and I told 'em again, I won't be selling out. The last thing this bit o' paradise needs is a resort filled with godlessness. Imagine that, a vacation for the richest of folks who think they need drinkin' round the clock and ladies for the askin'. It just ain't right.
When I inherited this place from my grandpa, he told me someday someone would come due to its scenery, hot springs, and breathtaking beauty. They would want me to sell it. Well, no sir. This is God's country and that's the way it's gonna stay.

Lord, tonight I pray for Joe and the rest of the guys. They don't understand that I must stand up for righteousness, that I must stay true to what I believe. They act like I'm the crazy one! No matter how hard I try, I can't get them to understand that honoring you in all I do is more important than getting rich over a piece of land. You are my riches, Lord, the pearl of great price.

Thank you, Lord, for answered prayer. My nephew will keep my will at his law office, and should something happen to me, those men will never get this land. I can rest in great peace tonight. Except for . . . my buddies, Lord. They're pressuring me something fierce. Show them what I'm really trying to do, I pray.

Hooey! Josiah really believed all that God stuff. Ain't that something. Wait till I show the guys this. They'll get a good laugh out of it. Imagine that, us being prayed for by some kind of saint . . . or nut. Ha, ha! He sure was out of his mind. Poor Josiah, so confused. Must have been some kind of dementia or something. Well, it wasn't a pretty way to go, but at least he's at peace now.
I sure wish we could have helped him. You know, helped him to see the light and all. He got what he wanted. No one will be able to build on that land now. Too bad about that. Might have been nice havin' all those pretty little ladies up on our mountain.
Poor ol' Josiah. You know . . . it sure is somethin' to know he was prayin' for us. Just can't get over that.
