JARON: An angel. Just got back from an earth assignment.
ABDIEL: Another angel, and Jaron’s friend.
Setting, props, and costumes: The setting is heaven, but that’s fairly obvious by the dialogue, so the setting could be as simple as two chairs, or a couch. Costumes could be white robes with wings, or just have the characters all in white. No props are needed, but use your imagination to create the scene and enhance the dialogue. Maybe there’s even a stuffed donkey sitting off to the side, listening in.
Other instructions: Let this be conversational, with natural actions, stage directions, and inflections.
ABDIEL: Oh man, Jaron, I just got back from the best angel assignment ever.
JARON: Oh? What happened, Abdiel? Did you get to save someone’s life?
ABDIEL: Not directly, I guess.
JARON: Well, then, what was it?
ABDIEL: Donkey duty.
JARON (confused): Uh… come again?
ABDIEL: You heard me. Donkey duty.
JARON: So… you saved a donkey’s life?
ABDIEL: Actually, I almost got her killed.
JARON: Abdiel, you’re making my head hurt. How is nearly killing a donkey ‘the best angel assignment ever?’
ABDIEL: You ever heard a donkey talk?
JARON: Okay, now you’re really not making sense. Are you sure you didn’t hit your head harder than you thought on your last assignment, when you had to hold that chariot wheel on?
ABDIEL: Nope. I’m perfectly sane.
JARON: I’d like to contest that one.
ABDIEL: Okay, okay. So I’m a bit odd. But let me tell you the rest of my donkey story.
JARON: Fine. But get on with it. I’ve got choir practice in thirty minutes.
ABDIEL: Pfft! Since when does time mean anything in heaven?
JARON: You make a valid point. So go on. Tell your story.
ABDIEL: Well, you see, Balaam was doing something God didn’t want him to do, so God sent me to block the path.
JARON: So Balaam’s the donkey?
ABDIEL: Nope. Human. Ashes is the donkey. Anyway, Balaam is on his donkey, plodding along, and here I come, standing right in front of them. Man, you should have seen the face she made.
JARON: Balaam?
ABDIEL: Nope. The donkey. So first Ashes goes into the field, and Balaam starts to beat her.
JARON: Awww. Poor Ashes.
ABDIEL: Don’t worry. It gets better. So then, I go away for a bit, and come back, and this time Ashes pushes herself against the rock, pinning Balaam’s foot.
JARON: Oh, that’ll show him.
ABDIEL: Except it doesn’t. He gets mad again and beats her. So the thrid time, Ashes just gave up, and collapsed and refused to move.
JARON: Classic.
ABDIEL: Then God opens Ashes’ mouth. So Ashes starts talking to Balaam, asking him why he’s struck her three times.
JARON: Oh man, I would have loved to have seen Balaam’s face when she started talking.
ABDIEL: That’s what so weird. Balaam just starts talking back to Ashes, as if there is nothing odd at all about a talking donkey. Not to mention the fact that he’s talking back to a donkey.
JARON: Sounds like Ashes is the smart one in this pair.
ABDIEL: I concur. So finally, God lets Balaam see me, and. . . Oh! Oh! Let me back up a bit. So when Balaam is talking to Ashes, before he can see me, he says "I would have killed you if I only had a sword." And I’m standing right there…
JARON: With a sword?
ABDIEL: Exactly.
JARON: Oh, that’s priceless.
ABDIEL: So when God finally lets Balaam see me, he bows down. I told him I would have killed him and let Ashes live, had the donkey not sopped.
JARON: So I’m guessing Balaam abandoned his mission?
ABDIEL: Actually, he offered to, but God allowed him to go on, but he could only speak the words God gave him.
JARON: What do you imagine Balaam is doing right about now?
ABDIEL: Dreaming of talking donkeys.
