He chuckled at the static on the radio. Should’ve brought some CD’s. He thought he’d just as well sing as he slowed the truck to manage the wet road. He belted one of his kids’ cartoon themes, the only tune he could think of.
His grin spanned a mile wide as he thought of little Kay's announcement that morning.
"Daddy, I have a toof 'pointment today." Gray wondered if his fearless wife Sue found enough umbrellas to get them all to the dentist.
The rain subsided and the sun cleared the clouds. Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about. He picked back up to the allowable speed. The road gleamed with moisture and the wet pines glistened in the sunshine. He’d get this load delivered, get back home before dark, and take the wife and kids for pizza.
The water in the deep dip of road looked like a small swimming pool. He slowed on approach, but the truck hydroplaned across. He lost control. A tree.
Darkness, then light. Pain. Some guy bending over. It's going to be all right.
Was that a drill whirring somewhere? Eyes blink open. There’s Sue, crying. Pain. Darkness.
He could not get to the bathroom by himself for two months. Somehow he couldn’t stop telling people about the rod in his leg, the stitches across the back of his head, the miracle that he lived.
Kevin Bromberg and Lisa Luna, the First Responders who arrived at the scene of the wreck, came to visit him in the hospital on release day. They opted for a hug when Gray offered his hand for a shake.
“I thank God every day that I’m still alive to be with my family. I’ll soon be going back to work. Thanks so much for being there.” Gray shifted his cast to a more comfortable position. “By the way, we never did hear who called 9-1-1. Nothing for miles out there where I wrecked."
“We don’t know. But we were wondering if you saw the man that was holding pressure on that serious gash on your head. He stepped aside as soon as we arrived. I looked up to ask him a question, and he was nowhere. The only other vehicle out there was the one wrapped around that tree. He just seemed to disappear."
Had God sent an angel to keep him from bleeding out until the EMTs arrived? Who called it in? Gray smiled.
“I don’t know, maybe he was angel. My eyes blinked open for only a moment. You know, I can't remember what he looked like, except that I had the feeling I was going to be OK."
"It's not the first time something unexplained has happened on our shift," Kevin said, casting a side glance at Lisa.
"One thing's for sure. Sue and I can tell you that lots of angels are involved in this. Angels from church babysit the kids so Sue can be with me. Angels fill our freezer with meals to make things easier. Angels have bought school supplies, cleaned the house, covered for me at work. Angels send cash to help with all the extra expenses we're experiencing right now. Angels pray with us and for us daily." Gray reached for Sue's hand.
"And then there's you two. Thanks so much for what you did." Gray put his hand over his heart.
"Our pleasure, so glad you're going to be OK." Kevin said as he and Lisa rose to leave. "I guess it's another unsolved mystery."
"You mean the guy on the scene? I'm very grateful, but couldn't say who he was or where he went."
"Maybe he had a 'pointment, Daddy," little Kay said from her mother's lap.
Ah, yes. Most likely a divine appointment.
