“I really don’t know how much more I can take.” Marcy sighed. “We can’t continue to clean up his mess every night after we get home from work.”
“Oh my gosh, look at the kitchen. How can one person dirty so many dishes in one day?”
Suddenly, the EF-5 tornado that was Nathan's 50-pound, seven-month old German Shepard catapulted into the room, knocking over a floor lamp in the process. A light bulb shattered. Sarah lost her balance and dropped into the orange and brown couch reclaimed from someone’s recent yard sale. The sagging couch engulfed her tiny frame.
“Man, I hate this sofa. I can't seem to ever find my way out of it.”
Marcy laughed. “Here, let me help you. I don't know what we were thinking. I mean, seriously, rooming with a guy. I still can't believe he lives like this. And, that dog. Do you think all guys are this much of a disaster? If so, I may never get married.”
“Has it really only been two months?” Sarah sighed.
“It seems more like forever since we moved in to this dump, Sarah. Gosh, do you remember that first night we got in and we couldn't even find the kitchen sink for all the piled up dirty dishes?”
“Yeah, it was ridiculous. We couldn't even fix dinner until we had spent an hour cleaning the kitchen counters and dishes.”
“Meeaaoooww.” An overly affectionate tabby cat, abandoned by the apartment's previous occupants, rubbed up against Marcy's leg.
“Great, I bet Nathan hasn't fed this cat today either.”
“I don't think its owners brought any food over. Gosh, this is just unbelievable. Maybe we should take it to the shelter. Good riddance.”
“Haha. I'm about to. Nathan never will stand up to Whitney and, yet, he won't take care of or clean up after her cat or even his own dog. And, then there's the litter box. Eeewwww.”
“Hey guys. You home already?” A yawn, a week's stubble, and an interesting aroma preceded Nathan into the room.
“Nathan, it's four in the afternoon. How many days have you slept in those clothes? Don't you ever go to classes, not to mention your job?”
Scratching his head, Nathan looked up through blood-shot eyes, waved a dismissing hand and slowly made his way to the kitchenette for his “morning” fueling.
Sarah shrugged her shoulders and rolled her eyes at Marcy who had moved across the room to their shared bedroom.
“Oh no, Sarah. Get in here NOW.”
Sprinting across the family room, Sarah gasped when she saw the bedroom. “That DOG.”
Clothes were ripped. A pile of something offensive covered one of her flip flops. And, worst of all, her laptop mouse dangled from her desk, swinging from shredded wires. The laptop hung over the precipice of the desk, taunting her, just as that silly puppy did every night – always on the brink of disaster.
“Some day maybe we can laugh about this.”
“Are you kidding me? I've only had this laptop for three months. And now look at it—scratched up and cords shredded. It's unbelievable.”
“Thank goodness our lease is month-to-month.
“Seriously. And, Nathan better be grateful I value my freedom more than prison time or I might do something I would regret.” Sarah allowed herself a small smile.
“We better start looking for a new place.”
“Yeah, and a new roommate.”
