his left leg was in a cast; hanging by a traction device. So, he must be in a hospital. He wanted answers. And…unbelievable! It looked like he had a roommate. Adam Ross didn’t share a room with anyone. And… just his luck; the roommate was headed toward him, and he was smiling.
“Hello, I’m Charley. Nice to see you awake. I’ll ring for the nurse.”
”I’ll ring my own bell, thanks.”
“Well, actually… you can’t.”
Adam realized it was true: one arm was in a cast, while the other was in a sling. And… to make things worse, his roommate was sitting in the chair, near his bed.
“How are you feeling?” asked Charley.
“How do you think I feel? I’m trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey. So, why are you in the hospital? Being treated for excess smiling?”
”Well, I had some surgery, yesterday.”
”And you’ve got time to talk my ear off? Where’s that blasted nurse?”
“She’ll be here, soon. After all, she’s got other patients.”
”I don’t give a rip about those other patients. I want answers. And, your surgery can’t have been that serious; if you’re this happy.”
“God always gives me strength to deal with whatever comes my way.”
”Oh, great; a religious nut. I suppose now you’ll preach about heaven.”
”Only if you want me to.”
“Why would I want you to? I’ve got nothing to do with God.”
“Well, if you stop grrowling like a grrizzly bear, you might realize God has a lot to do with you.”
“Growling? How dare you?”
“Can I help you?” interrupted a uniformed redhead.
“Listen,” barked Adam. “You’re too young to be my nurse. Get my doctor.”
“I’ll get your doctor, sir - but first, you need to talk to the detective”
“Why should I talk to a detective? And why is my foot strung up? What’s wrong with my arms?”
“Mr. Ross, you’ve had a car accident,” she replied.
“Well, who hit my car?”
“I’ll let the detective tell you that.”
When he’d seen the detective’s badge, Adam asked: “Well, who hit my car?”
“Sir, I’m Detective Robinson,” said the detective. To Adam’s amazement, the man began the Miranda Warning.
Adam interrupted, “What is this? All I want to know is who to sue for my accident.”
The detective remained firm. “Sir, let me finish this; then, I’ll answer your questions.” When he finished, he told Adam: “No one hit your car; you hit another car – while driving the wrong way, on the highway. When we tested your blood, it showed you’d been drinking heavily.”
“That’s ridiculous. I only had a few drinks. That other car must’ve been driven by some maniac.”
”No, sir; it was a mother, with three children.”
“See? A female driver. I bet they’re all fine.”
”Not exactly.”
“Oh, I suppose they got a few Band-Aids on their booboos and went home.”
”No…they didn’t make it.”
”Didn’t make what?”
”They were all killed on impact.”
”Oh, …well…that’s awful. But, that can’t be my fault.”
“Sir, I’m afraid it looks as if you were at fault.”
”Come on! I wasn’t drinking that much.”
”Sir, I’d suggest you call a lawyer. Here’s my card. I’ll be back later this afternoon,” the detective said.
”You bet you’ll be hearing from my lawyer!” Adam snarled, as the detective left the room.
“Now, there’s that grrizzly bear act, again,” said his roommate – who’d had the bad taste to remain by his bedside.
“Grizzly bear, my foot. How am I supposed to feel?”
”Remorseful?”
”Me? What do I have to be remorseful about? It’s not my fault those people are dead – is it?”
“I can’t answer that, but the Bible says we’re all sinners, Adam.”
“Ha! I knew you’d preach to me. Well …maybe this is partially my fault. So, what am I supposed to do about it?
”It is a lot to take in, Adam.”
”Well... look… Charley…is there anything in that Bible that’ll help this grizzly bear out of this mess?”
“Well, you can’t do anything to bring back that family, and you can’t growl your way out of the legal consequences.”
“I know.”
“But 1 John 1: 9 will help you make a start in getting right with God. Shall I read it?”
”Charley… I’d be grrateful.”
