To run and play and shout,
But I am stuck inside a box,
Just waiting to get out.
I cannot clap my little hands
Or touch my tiny toes.
I cannot bend my legs and arms
Or even scratch my nose.
I cannot climb out by myself,
No matter how I try.
I call for help and wait a while
Till someone passes by.
Then when that someone gets me out,
I have a lot of fun.
I climb up high upon a stage
And shout and play and run.
I clap my hands and bend my knees
Until I touch my toes.
I twist my arms all kinds of ways
And even scratch my nose.
The children laugh to see me play,
But they don’t understand:
There’s not an action I control.
I’m moved by someone’s hand.
Have you guessed yet just who I am?
A puppet on a string!
Without a puppeteer in charge,
I can’t do anything.
