“Hmm, a caravan of camels. Looks like rich travelers from the East,” he said as he stepped up beside her. “Wonder what brings them here.”
As the expedition drew closer, most men wore crowns of precious gems, colorful robes of silk, and gold chains draped around their necks, a stark contrast to the desolate surroundings. The animals, heavy laden with sacks piled high on their backs, bellowed as they stopped and kneeled before the family. All the men on other camels slid from their backs and fell to their knees, faces to the ground.
“We are Magi from the East. One of the men said as he raised his head. “Ancient writings we have studied have led us on this journey. We have traveled one full turning of the moon and are searching for the house of the great King whose star shines brightly in the sky.” He pointed up. “Looks like this is it.”
“We wish to worship Him.” They all said in unison as the toddler cooed peacefully in Mary’s arms.
The man’s eyes lit up. “This must be the child whom we seek. Please,” he pleaded, “accept our gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
Mary and Joseph stood in awe as men appearing as servants scurried to unload sacks from the camels.
“You are extremely generous,” Joseph said as Mary nodded in agreement. “Please, come inside our humble home and rest the night so that we may nourish you before you go on your way.”
The men stood and then bowed. “We would be greatly honored.”
Early the next morning, as he donned his robe and crown, one of the wise men said. “Our mission is complete. We have been exceedingly privileged to see the great King and experience your hospitality. However, we must leave now, for we have many miles to travel, and so must be on our way.”
So as the sun rose in the East, the men bowed before the family and went on their way.

A few days later, before sunup, Joseph awoke with a start. “Mary, we must leave here immediately; King Herod seeks to kill our son. We must flee! “
“Why do you say this, Joseph…what do you mean?”
” I was given a dream last night, a strict warning to leave this place right away. The boy’s life is in great danger. Quickly, we don’t have much time!
“Where shall we go?”
“Another country,” he said, “someplace far away. But don’t worry, the Lord will guide us. Now hurry, we must go. “
Mary despairingly took a deep breath as she considered the immense bounty of gold, frankincense, and myrrh packed in bags, spread across the room. “I think we’ll need more donkeys.”
“Yes, you are right. But take heart, my wife… the Lord always provides.”
