Elisabeth Elliot became a hero to me.
About the same time, a preacher was making news as he held crusades across the United States. His message was very simple and consistent. People streamed to hear him. His sermons remained the same. Humble and eloquent he shared with others, “Jesus loves you. Come just as you are.” I needed to hear those words.
I sang in two of his choirs. I read his books. He remained unpretentious and subservient. His fame never changed his discourse. He remained unassuming to the end of his life.
Billy Graham became a hero to me.
In the last year, I began attending a different church. One of the first people to welcome me was a younger man. As I observed him during the service, it seemed he had several children. Over the course of weeks, I was able to have a more in-depth conversation with him, in which I discovered he is a single dad. Having been a single mom, I quickly understood some of the circumstances he had to deal with. Yet, Sunday after Sunday he arrives at church with his four children.
He has become a hero to me.
