“We have two more sleeps,” I answered. Then added, “Make sure the clothes you plan to take are clean or in the laundry.”
My husband and I were taking Becky, her sisters, and grandparents on a three week trip out West. We planned to see several national park attractions, as well as relatives she did not get to see very often.
Two days later the laundry was done, the suitcases packed, and the van was loaded for our adventure. My husband and I knew this trip was probably the last chance we could have a vacation like this before the dynamics of our family would begin to change. Our oldest daughter was heading into her last year of high school, then summers of working, and college.... So we hoped for a vacation with lasting memories.
And, what a trip it was. We rode through the Bad Lands, saw amazing Mount Rushmore, visited extended family, relived the history of Battlefields, and drove on to Yellowstone Park. Seeing Old Faithful, the boiling mud pots, and roaming buffalo was breath-taking for sure.
Leaving the exhilarating sights of Yellowstone, we drove into Jackson Hole where we marveled at the Grand Tetons. You might think by now we would be getting on each others’ nerves, but with little bribes and some preplanned surprises, everyone remained compatible in spite of long rides between sights.
As we started heading back towards the eastern part of the US, our route took us into Colorado. Our hope was to get to our destination by early afternoon and we would have a few hours to stretch our legs and just relax. As we came around a turn in the road we could see that traffic was at a standstill ahead. Oh, no! We were on a hill, so we could not see very far ahead. What was causing the hold up, and how long would it be? We came to a stop, and were astonished to see several bulls cresting the top of the hill. More were following and soon they engulfed the roadway on both sides of the stopped cars. They were looking us in the eye, bawling, and kicking up dust. All of us were captivated by the scenario. Soon a couple of cow punchers topped the hill and we realized we were seeing a real live cattle drive—a cow punching—right before our eyes! No one complained about the interruption.
A short time later we arrived at our destination without further delay. When checking into our accommodations, the manager asked my husband if we would like some free tickets to the State High School Rodeo Competition. Would we! Do ducks like water? It was a good way to enjoy time out of the car, and seeing cow punchers in-the-making promised to be fun.
Soon after returning home we were enjoying looking at all the pictures of our great vacation. The Bad Lands, Mount Rushmore, unbelievable Yellowstone Park, the Rodeo and so much more filled our minds. We asked our four daughters, “What did you enjoy the most?”
Without hesitation, they exclaimed almost in unison, “The cattle drive!” Yes! Cow Punchers doing their job is quite memorable indeed!
